6th Annual Vancouver Urban Farming Forum
On Saturday, November 21, the 6th annual Urban Farming Forum was held at Creekside Community Centre. The event brought together over 100 people, including farmers, farm apprentices/volunteers, people representing municipal government, industry, non-profit organizations, and interested community members. 14 presenters from various farms and organizations presented and discussed on 6 different topics, engaging participants in a wide variety of discussions.

The day was kicked off with a keynote presentation from VUFS Executive Director Marcela Crowe, who gave an overview of the innovative ways that people are farming in urban contexts around North America. By comparing the different ways that farmers are overcoming obstacles and addressing challenges, Marcela highlighted the many opportunities for Vancouver’s urban farming community to continue to grow.

The 6 session topics addressed social innovation in urban farming, e-commerce, engaging community, HR management, building relationships with restaurants, and lessons learned from the Local Garden rooftop greenhouse project. In each session, between 1-4 experienced presenters shared their experience in the urban farming world, whether as a farmer or as someone working with urban farmers. Participants were able to ask their questions and interact directly with the experts on the topics of interest.

Being a gathering of local food enthusiasts, lunch was an important part of the day! Prepared by Pastiche Food, with most of the ingredients supplied by Vancouver urban farmers, the lunch was a satisfying display of local, seasonal produce.
